Infused water provides gentle flavor without added sugars, syrups, preservatives, or artificial ingredients. From bright citrus blends to cooling cucumber combinations and fragrant herbal infusions, these naturally enhanced waters can transform hydration from a chore into something you genuinely look forward to enjoying throughout the day. Infusing water with the beneficial essence of fruits, herbs, and botanicals is one of the simplest ways to stay hydrated without the downside of excess calories, sugars, artificial sweeteners, or synthetic flavorings. Fresh ingredients not only add natural flavor and visual appeal, but many also contribute beneficial plant compounds that have been valued for generations. Whether you're seeking a refreshing summer beverage, an alternative to sugary drinks, or simply a more enjoyable way to increase your daily water intake, infused water offers a clean, natural, and delicious solution. To help you create the freshest and most flavorful infusions possible, here are some best practices, preparation techniques, and storage recommendations that will help you get the most from every pitcher, mason jar, or bottle you prepare. 💧 Skip the sugar and refresh naturally. These simple infused water combinations add flavor, aroma, and enjoyment to your daily hydration routine—without artificial ingredients, sweeteners, or unnecessary calories. Which blend will you try first? ✅ Best Practices for Infused Water 🌿 Choose Organic Ingredients Whenever possible, select organic fruits, herbs, and botanicals to minimize exposure to pesticides and other agricultural residues. 🧼 Wash Thoroughly Rinse all ingredients well under cool running water to remove dirt, dust, and any remaining impurities before use. 💧 Start with Quality Water For the cleanest taste, use chilled reverse-osmosis filtered water. Many enthusiasts also prefer structured water for everyday hydration. 🔥 Avoid Hot Water Warm or hot water can diminish delicate flavors, essential oils, and heat-sensitive compounds. Always begin with cool or chilled water. 🥛 Use Glass Containers Glass pitchers, mason jars, and bottles help preserve flavor purity and eliminate concerns about plastic leaching into your water. 🚶♂️ Take It On the Go Enjoy infused water throughout the day by carrying it in reusable glass bottles. Traditional glass bottles with ceramic closures are both practical and environmentally friendly. Tip: Aldi occasionally carries French lemonade in reusable glass bottles that make excellent containers for infused water. 💚💧 Tip: Aldi sells French lemonade in reusable glass bottles perfect for this! These refreshing infused water combinations make it easier to stay hydrated while enjoying the natural goodness of fruits, herbs, and botanicals.🍋 Real ingredients. Beautiful flavors. Better hydration. 🍋 Tips for Preparation 🔪 Cut for Maximum Flavor Chop fruits and vegetables into smaller pieces whenever possible. More exposed surface area allows flavors to infuse into the water more quickly and thoroughly. 🍓 Prepare Soft Fruits Creatively Citrus fruits, strawberries, and other berries can be sliced thick or thin, halved, or quartered depending on your desired presentation and flavor intensity. 🍎 Thinly Slice Firm Fruits Apples, pears, and other dense fruits release their flavors more effectively when sliced very thin. 🥄 Bruise Fibrous Ingredients Before adding ginger, rosemary, lemongrass, or similar ingredients, gently crush or bruise them with a wooden spoon to help release their natural oils and flavors. 🌿 Tear Fresh Herbs Lightly tear mint, basil, cilantro, or other leafy herbs just before use. This helps activate their aromatic oils without over-processing them. 🫖 Contain Loose Botanicals For ingredients such as dried hibiscus, lavender buds, chamomile flowers, or rose petals, use a tea infuser or cheesecloth pouch to make straining easier and keep your infusion clear and attractive. 💡 Less Is Often More Start with modest amounts of herbs and botanicals. You can always add more, but overly strong infusions can quickly overpower the water's natural freshness. ⏳ Soak Time & Temperature 🥒 Quick-Infusing Ingredients Cucumber, citrus fruits, melons, and mint release their flavors rapidly and can be enjoyed almost immediately after preparation. 🌡️ Brief Room-Temperature Infusions Herbs, spices, and tougher botanicals may be infused at room temperature for up to one hour before transferring to the refrigerator. 🧊 Keep It Chilled Store infused water in the refrigerator whenever possible to maintain freshness, flavor, and food safety. 🌙 Overnight Favorites Ingredients such as apple slices, cinnamon sticks, ginger root, and rosemary benefit from a longer, overnight infusion to fully develop their flavors. 🍓 Use Delicate Fruits Promptly Melons and sliced strawberries can become soft and waterlogged after several hours. For the best appearance and texture, enjoy them the same day. 🍊 Watch Citrus Infusions Citrus slices and whole berries maintain their appearance longer, but extended soaking may cause citrus peels to release bitter compounds. 🎉 Entertaining Tip For parties and gatherings, infuse citrus fruits for approximately four hours, remove the original slices, and add fresh citrus just before serving for the most attractive presentation. 🕒 Enjoy Within 24 Hours For optimal flavor and freshness, consume infused water within 24 hours. If storing longer, strain out the solids and refrigerate for up to three days. 🔁 Create a Second Infusion When your bottle or pitcher is about half empty, simply refill with fresh water. The ingredients will provide a lighter but still enjoyable second infusion. Staying properly hydrated is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to support overall wellness. With just a few fresh ingredients and a little preparation, infused water can become a delicious daily ritual that helps you drink more water while enjoying nature’s flavors at their finest. By following the best practices and preparation tips outlined above, you'll create cleaner, fresher, and more flavorful infusions every time. Experiment with seasonal fruits, aromatic herbs, and your own favorite combinations to discover what you enjoy most. There is no single perfect recipe—only countless opportunities to make hydration more enjoyable and nourishing. Fill a glass, savor the flavors, and raise a toast to better hydration, one refreshing sip at a time. 💚💧🍋 Stay hydrated, naturally and beautifully. Your body will thank you. Bon Appétit! Chef Janine.

- 💤 Sleep, Pistachios & The Path to Restful Nights
Getting quality sleep is essential for our overall health — but for many, falling and staying asleep is a nightly struggle. Whether it's insomnia or simply tossing and turning through the night, the root cause often lies in a disrupted sleep-wake cycle. Let’s explore what causes restless sleep and how nature’s own remedy — pistachios — might be the sleep aid your pantry’s been missing. Pistachios are full of bioactive compounds that promote the induction of sleep. What Causes Insomnia & Restless Sleep Many lifestyle and environmental factors can interrupt your sleep. Common culprits include: 😰 Stress Chronic stress increases cortisol levels, which overstimulates the brain and makes it harder to fall or stay asleep. 🧠 Mental health concerns (anxiety, depression) Mood disorders often disrupt the brain’s ability to regulate sleep cycles, leading to frequent wake-ups or trouble falling asleep. 🌡️ Room temperature A room that is too hot or too cold can interfere with the body’s ability to reach the deep, restorative stages of sleep. 🛏️ Uncomfortable sleeping environment Poor-quality bedding, noise, clutter, or an unsupportive mattress can all make it hard to relax into a restful slumber. ⏰ Irregular sleep patterns (e.g., night shifts) Disrupted circadian rhythms from shift work or inconsistent sleep schedules confuse the body’s natural clock. 💡 Too much light — natural or artificial Bright lights, especially blue light from screens, suppress melatonin production and delay sleep onset. 📱 Electronic devices in the room The light and mental stimulation from TVs, phones, and tablets can keep your brain too active to wind down. 💤 Not enough physical activity A sedentary lifestyle means your body doesn’t expend enough energy during the day to feel naturally tired at night. 🏃 Exercising too close to bedtime While exercise is healthy, intense workouts too late in the evening can leave your body too alert to rest. 🍽️ Poor dietary choices Heavy, spicy, or high-sodium meals — especially late at night — can lead to indigestion, dehydration, and disrupted sleep. 🌰 Pistachios: Nature’s Melatonin Snack Did you know? Pistachios are one of the most melatonin-rich plant-based foods available! In a 2019 study by Louisiana State University researchers, American pistachios were found to contain 660 ng/gram of melatonin — significantly more than most other edible plants. Pistachios: Nutrition & Sleep-Supporting Benefits Nutrient / Compound Amount (Per 1 oz / ~28g) Sleep & Health Benefits 💊 Bioactive Compounds Naturally occurring Promote sleep onset and improve overall sleep quality by calming the nervous system. 🧬 Protein 6 grams Helps with muscle repair and satiety; stabilizes blood sugar through the night. 🧬 Antioxidants Includes lutein, zeaxanthin, and polyphenols Reduce oxidative stress, supporting brain and body recovery during sleep. 👁️ Lutein & Zeaxanthin Naturally present Protect eye health, especially important during screen-heavy days that impact melatonin. 🥉 Copper 0.36 mg (41% DV) Aids in regulating the circadian rhythm and maintaining energy balance. 🧠 Vitamin B6 0.4 mg (25% DV) Converts tryptophan to serotonin, which the body uses to produce melatonin. 🌿 Fiber 3 grams Supports digestion and gut microbiome balance, which influences the sleep-wake cycle. 🌱 Prebiotic Properties Naturally occurring Feed beneficial gut bacteria, improving mood and sleep quality through the gut-brain axis. 🌰 Melatonin ~660 ng/gram (highest among edible plants) Regulates your sleep-wake cycle naturally without the need for supplements. ⏰ When & How Many Pistachios Should You Eat? Delicious, nutrient-rich, and naturally powerful — pistachios just might be the crunch your dreams are made of. Melatonin production naturally rises after sunset and falls with morning light, helping your body maintain its sleep-wake rhythm. 📌 Tip for best results: Eat pistachios at least 2 hours before bedtime to avoid indigestion or acid reflux. 📏 How Much Should You Eat? To get a natural melatonin dose equivalent to supplements (0.5–3mg), aim for: 75 grams or ~2.6 ounces of pistachios That’s about 4 dozen pistachios ✅ No worries about overdosing — pistachios are a safe, wholesome bedtime snack. 🌙 Final Thought: Instead of reaching for a pill, try a handful of pistachios next time you’re craving rest. While pistachios are not a magic cure for insomnia, they can be a nutritious addition to a healthy sleep routine. Combined with good sleep habits, regular physical activity, stress management, and a balanced diet, these little green nuts may help support your body's natural sleep-wake cycle. Sometimes the simplest solutions are found not in the medicine cabinet, but in nature's pantry. If better sleep is one of your goals, consider adding pistachios to your evening routine and see how your body responds. Sleep well, eat well, and be well. Chef Janine.
- The Great American Smoker & Grill Feast — Celebrating 250 Years of Independence
Honoring America’s 250th With a Grand Smoker & Grill Celebration Feast Happy Birthday America! We Americans are passionate about meat, barbecue traditions, and gathering around the table to enjoy a variety of bold flavors in one unforgettable meal. In celebration of upcoming Independence Day — marking the 250th anniversary of the United States — Comfort Keto is proud to present two special all-American feast platters created for this historic occasion. One platter celebrates the rich traditions of the American smokehouse, while the other highlights the vibrant flavors of open-fire grilling inspired by the rich culinary traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean. Together, these two special offerings bring smoke, fire, craftsmanship, and celebration to the holiday table. The Texas Smokehouse BBQ Plate Chef Janine’s Texas Smokehouse BBQ Plate features three delicious smoked meats: • Beef rib (one full rib) • Beef brisket (4 oz) • Smokehouse sausage (one whole link) Our Fourth of July Feast features a slow-smoked beef rib, tender brisket, and a juicy smokehouse sausage—all the bold BBQ flavor you love without the sugar. 🔥🥩 They are smoked low and slow with hickory wood. All three meats are smoked together low and slow with hickory wood. Hickory gives the meats a deep, bold smoky flavor that defines traditional American barbecue and fills the air with an irresistible smokehouse aroma guaranteed to make everyone’s mouth water. Chef Janine carefully selects cuts of meat that are high in fat, richly marbled, and layered with thick connective tissue. Such cuts contain large amounts of collagen, which naturally makes the muscles tough and chewy. During the long smoking process, however, low heat slowly breaks down the collagen, transforming the meat into tender, juicy perfection while allowing it to absorb layers of smoky flavor. Brisket comes from the lower chest of the cow — a heavily worked muscle that supports much of the animal’s body weight. Because of its dense connective tissue and rich marbling, brisket is considered one of America’s most iconic barbecue meats. A full brisket can weigh anywhere from 8 to 20 pounds before trimming and smoking. Beef ribs likewise require patience, low heat, and many hours in the smoker to fully develop their rich texture and deep flavor profile. The Mediterranean Grill Assortment Plate The second featured platter celebrates the ancient open-fire grilling traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean — cultures famous for transforming meats into beautifully seasoned kebabs and grilled specialties over glowing charcoal or open flame. Chef Janine’s Mediterranean Grill Assortment Plate features: • Flame-grilled beef kabobs • Marinated chicken kabobs • Traditional beef-lamb koftahs Not in the mood for smokehouse BBQ? A Mediterranean feast for the Fourth of July—tender beef kebab, juicy marinated chicken, and savory grilled beef kofta, all cooked over an open flame. Unlike smoking, which slowly cooks meats over indirect heat for many hours, grilling exposes meats directly to high heat and open flame. This method quickly caramelizes the outer surface of the meat, creating rich charred flavors, smoky edges, and juicy interiors. The beef kebab is prepared from carefully selected cuts with excellent marbling for tenderness and flavor. The chicken kebab is marinated to remain exceptionally juicy while developing a lightly charred exterior over the grill. The beef kofta — seasoned ground beef formed around a skewer — reflects one of the oldest grilling traditions in the Mediterranean and Middle East. Richly seasoned and flame grilled, kofta develop a deep savory flavor and distinctive grilled aroma that pairs perfectly with the kebabs. Together, these grilled selections create a vibrant contrast to the slow-smoked barbecue platter — bringing together two great meat traditions in honor of America’s historic 250th Independence Day celebration. A Special Holiday Smokehouse & Grill Feast Available Exclusively for America’s 250th Birthday Celebration As America prepares to celebrate its historic 250th Independence Day, Comfort Keto invites you to gather around the table with family and friends and enjoy a true feast of smoke, fire, tradition, and flavor. Both the Texas Smokehouse BBQ Plate and the Mediterranean Grill Assortment Plate will be prepared in limited quantities for the holiday celebration. Because of the extensive preparation time required for slow smoking, marinating, skewering, and grilling these specialty meats, availability will be limited and advance inquiries are strongly encouraged. We invite you to reach out to us beginning in mid-June for ordering information, pricing, and pickup details. Celebrate America’s 250th with an unforgettable handcrafted feast prepared by Chef Janine and Comfort Keto. Visit www.comfortketo.com to check when these featured dishes become available again. Bon Appétit! Chef Janine.
- The Best Beef Steak Cuts for Keto, Carnivore, and Ketovore Diets
With so many steak cuts available at the butcher counter, choosing the right one can be confusing. Tenderness, flavor, fat content, cooking method, and price all play important roles. And with beef prices rising in recent years, getting the most value for your dollar matters more than ever. Whether you're following a ketogenic, carnivore, or ketovore lifestyle, this guide ranks popular steak cuts from best to least desirable based on overall flavor, tenderness, versatility, and value. Cooking Tip: For best tenderness, slice against the grain. Recommended Doneness Guide: Cooking Tip: Let steaks rest before slicing. 1. Ribeye Steak Cut from the rib section, ribeye is widely considered the king of steaks. Available bone-in (Tomahawk) or boneless, ribeye delivers exceptional marbling throughout the cut. As the intramuscular fat renders during cooking, it bastes the meat from within, creating remarkable flavor, juiciness, and tenderness. Ribeye also responds exceptionally well to dry-aging, a process that enhances both tenderness and flavor. For keto and carnivore enthusiasts who appreciate rich, fatty cuts, ribeye remains the gold standard. 2. Porterhouse Steak Often called the "King of the Steakhouse," the porterhouse combines two premium cuts in one steak: a New York Strip on one side of the bone and a generous portion of tenderloin (filet mignon) on the other. While both porterhouse and T-bone steaks come from the short loin and share the characteristic T-shaped bone, the porterhouse contains a significantly larger tenderloin section. The result is a steak that offers both the rich flavor of a strip steak and the unmatched tenderness of filet mignon. 3. Hanger Steak Known as the "butcher's secret," hanger steak is prized for its deep beef flavor and surprising tenderness. It comes from the diaphragm area of the animal and contains excellent marbling for such a relatively small cut. Because there is only one hanger steak per animal, availability is limited. However, many steak enthusiasts consider it one of the best-tasting cuts available, often rivaling far more expensive steaks. 4. Bavette Steak (Flap Steak) Bavette, often called flap steak, is another favorite among serious steak lovers. Cut from the lower sirloin area, it delivers an intensely beefy flavor with a loose grain structure that readily absorbs marinades and seasonings. When cooked properly and sliced against the grain, bavette offers an outstanding balance of tenderness, flavor, and value. 5. Filet Mignon Filet mignon is cut from the tenderloin, one of the least-used muscles in the animal. This lack of activity creates extraordinary tenderness. Although filet mignon contains less marbling than ribeye or New York strip, its buttery texture and delicate flavor have made it one of the most sought-after steaks in the world. Simple seasoning with salt and proper cooking are often all that's needed. Grass-fed and grain-finished filets each offer distinct flavor profiles. Grass-fed beef tends to be leaner with a more pronounced beef flavor, while grain-finished beef typically produces greater marbling and a milder taste. 6. New York Strip Cut from the short loin, New York Strip offers an excellent balance between tenderness and flavor. It contains more marbling than filet mignon while retaining a firmer texture that many steak enthusiasts prefer. Its versatility makes it ideal for grilling, pan-searing, or reverse searing. New York Strip also pairs exceptionally well with bold red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon. 7. Denver Steak One of the newer steak cuts to gain popularity, the Denver steak comes from the chuck region. Although many chuck cuts are traditionally used for slow cooking, the Denver steak offers surprising tenderness and excellent marbling. Its rich flavor and relatively affordable price make it a hidden gem for those fortunate enough to find it. 8. Flat Iron Steak Flat iron steak originates from the chuck and is created by removing a tough connective tissue from the top blade roast. Once that tissue is removed, what remains is one of the most tender cuts outside of the loin. Its generous marbling and consistent thickness make it an excellent choice for grilling or pan-searing. 9. Tri-Tip A California favorite, tri-tip comes from the lower portion of the sirloin. While leaner than ribeye, it develops excellent flavor when grilled over high heat and cooked to medium-rare. Tri-tip remains one of the best value cuts available, offering impressive flavor without the premium price tag of many steakhouse cuts. 10. Top Sirloin Top sirloin strikes a balance between affordability and quality. Leaner than many premium steaks but still reasonably tender, it performs well with simple seasoning and high-heat cooking. For those seeking a budget-friendly steak that still delivers solid flavor and texture, top sirloin remains a dependable choice. 11. T-Bone Steak T-bone steaks contain both strip loin and tenderloin separated by a T-shaped bone. While visually impressive, they contain a smaller tenderloin section than porterhouse steaks. Still, T-bones offer an enjoyable combination of tenderness and flavor and remain a popular steakhouse classic. 12. Skirt Steak Skirt steak comes from the diaphragm and is known for its bold beef flavor. While somewhat chewy compared to premium cuts, it performs exceptionally well when quickly grilled over high heat and sliced thinly against the grain. Its intense flavor has made it a favorite for fajitas and other grilled dishes. 13. Flank Steak Flank steak comes from the abdominal muscles and is naturally lean with long muscle fibers. Quick, high-heat cooking combined with slicing thinly against the grain can greatly improve tenderness. Flank steak readily absorbs marinades and rewards careful preparation, making it a versatile and economical option. 14. Round Steak Round steak is cut from the rear leg of the animal and contains very little intramuscular fat. Because these muscles receive significant exercise, the meat tends to be firmer and less tender than other cuts. Round steak is best suited for slow cooking, braising, or other methods that allow time for the connective tissues to break down. While affordable, it generally lacks the richness and tenderness found in higher-ranked cuts. Final Thoughts The "best" steak ultimately comes down to personal preference. Some people prioritize tenderness, while others seek rich marbling and deep beef flavor. For most keto, carnivore, and ketovore eaters, however, ribeye remains the benchmark by which all other steaks are measured. That said, exceptional value can often be found in lesser-known cuts such as hanger, bavette, Denver, and tri-tip—steaks that frequently deliver premium flavor without premium pricing. Visit www.comfortketo.com to check when these featured beef cuts return to the menu. Bon Appétit! Chef Janine.
- Standing with Law Enforcement During Challenging Times
Dear Community, Following our donation to the San Jacinto Sheriff's Station the previous week, we were honored to deliver six trays of our chef-prepared ketogenic meals to the Hemet Police Department. What began as a simple gesture of gratitude became something much more meaningful. In the midst of the challenges of 2020, Comfort Keto was honored to deliver chef-prepared ketogenic meals to the officers of the Hemet Police Department as a small token of appreciation for their dedication, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to protecting our community. We remain grateful for those who serve others every day. 🇺🇸👮♂️👮♀️❤️🍽️ During the difficult and uncertain days of 2020, communities across the nation faced unprecedented challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted daily life, businesses struggled to survive, and social unrest created tensions in many cities. Across the country, law enforcement officers often found themselves at the center of intense criticism, public frustration, and uncertainty. Regardless of the national debate, we recognized that the men and women serving our local communities continued to report for duty every day. They answered calls, responded to emergencies, protected neighborhoods, and stood ready to help others despite the personal risks and pressures they faced. At Comfort Keto, we believed this was not a time to turn away from those who serve. Instead, we felt called to stand alongside them in a simple but meaningful way. As chefs, the best way we knew how to express our appreciation was through food. We delivered six trays of our prepared ketogenic meals to the officers of the Hemet Police Department as a small token of gratitude for their commitment, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to our community. Law enforcement is more than a profession. For many officers, it is a calling answered every day through service, sacrifice, courage, and a willingness to place the needs of others before their own. We also remember and honor the brave officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Their service and dedication will never be forgotten. Today, as we reflect on those challenging times, we remain grateful for the officers who continue to serve our communities with integrity, resilience, and determination. We continue to lift up all law enforcement officers and first responders with this prayer: "Lord, watch over those who serve and protect our communities. Grant them wisdom in their decisions, courage in moments of danger, strength during difficult days, and peace for their families. Keep them safe as they work to safeguard others, and bless them for their service. Amen." With gratitude, Chef Janine Lechuga & the Comfort Keto Family
- Keto Sangria Is A Staple On Hot Summer Days
Very much like paella, sangria is one of the most recognizable drinks associated with Spanish cuisine. On a warm summer day, few things pair better with a delicious keto meal than an occasional glass of refreshing sangria. We especially enjoy it alongside a flavorful keto paella, where the bright fruit flavors and crisp bubbles create the perfect complement to the dish. If you're looking for a low-carb version of this timeless Mediterranean classic, our Keto Sparkling Wine Sangria is sure to become a favorite. It delivers the festive flavor, vibrant color, and elegance of traditional sangria while helping you stay aligned with your ketogenic lifestyle. Enjoy it occasionally at summer gatherings, backyard barbecues, celebrations, or relaxing weekends with family and friends. Best of all, this refreshing drink comes together in just minutes, making it an effortless addition to any warm-weather menu. For the base, choose either a sparkling red or sparkling white wine, depending on your preference. Add a medley of fresh berries, a splash of lime juice, and sparkling water for a light, refreshing finish. For an extra kick, you can also add a few shots of vodka. Now, before we get to the recipe, let's take a brief journey through the fascinating history of sangria—a beverage whose roots stretch back more than two thousand years. A Toast Through History: The Story of Sangria The story of sangria begins long before Spain and Portugal made it famous. Ancient Greeks and Romans commonly mixed wine with water, herbs, and spices. Wine was often diluted before drinking, both as a matter of custom and because water quality could vary greatly from place to place. These early wine-based beverages became an important part of Mediterranean daily life, social gatherings, and celebrations. Long before sangria became Spain's signature drink, Greeks and Romans were already blending wine with water, herbs, and spices across the Mediterranean world. 🍷🏛️ As these traditions spread across Europe, the people of the Iberian Peninsula—modern-day Spain and Portugal—began enhancing their wine mixtures with local fruits, citrus, spices, and occasionally spirits. Over centuries, these simple refreshments evolved into what we now know as sangria. The name comes from the Spanish and Portuguese word sangre ("blood"), a reference to the deep red color of the original red wine versions. Contrary to popular belief, sangria was not always made exactly as it is today. Early versions often contained little more than wine, water, herbs, and spices. As trade expanded and citrus fruits became more widely available, oranges, lemons, and other fruits found their way into the recipe. Regional variations soon followed, with some versions incorporating brandy, while others included sparkling water for a lighter and more refreshing drink. By the 18th century, sangria had become a favorite at gatherings and celebrations throughout Spain and Portugal. Over centuries, the people of the Iberian Peninsula transformed these ancient wine traditions into the fruit-infused beverage we now know as sangria. As Spanish and Portuguese culture spread throughout Europe and the Americas, sangria traveled with it, gradually gaining recognition far beyond its homeland. 🌎 The 1964 New York World's Fair introduced sangria to millions of Americans, launching its journey from a Spanish tradition to a global favorite. 🍷 A pivotal moment in sangria's history came in 1964, when Spain introduced the beverage to millions of visitors at the New York World's Fair. What had long been a cherished tradition in Spain and Portugal suddenly found a new audience across the Atlantic. In the years that followed, sangria began appearing in Spanish restaurants, cultural festivals, and community celebrations throughout the United States. Its colorful presentation and refreshing flavor quickly made it a favorite for warm-weather gatherings and casual entertaining. By the 1980s and 1990s, sangria had become a familiar sight on restaurant menus and at backyard parties across America. Today, it is enjoyed around the world and remains one of the most beloved and recognizable drinks associated with Spanish cuisine. Bringing History to Your Glass: Ingredients Fresh berries add vibrant color, natural sweetness, and a refreshing summer character to this keto-friendly sangria. 🍓🫐 🫐 2 cups mixed berries — blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries 🍾 750 ml sparkling wine (1 bottle) 💧 500 ml sparkling water 🍋 Fresh lime juice 🍊 Lime and/or orange slices for garnish 🍃 Stevia, to taste 🧊 Ice cubes — plus extra for serving 🍒 Optional: 250 ml unsweetened cranberry juice (no added sugar) Crafting Your Keto Sangria Chef Janine's keto-friendly sangria is the perfect refreshment for hot summer days. Wash and chop the fruit into bite-sized pieces. Place the fruit in a half-gallon pitcher or jug. Add plenty of ice. Pour in the bottle of sparkling wine. Add the unsweetened cranberry juice, if using. Top off with sparkling water and sweeten to taste with stevia. Stir gently until well combined. Serve in large glasses over additional ice and enjoy. Tip: For the best flavor, allow the sangria to chill for 30–60 minutes before serving so the fruit can infuse the wine. Cheers to summer, good company, and keto-friendly indulgence. May your glass be refreshing, your paella delicious, and your gatherings memorable. 🥂☀️🍓🫐🍋 Bon Appetit! Chef Janine.
- Which Keto Ice Cream Is Best? We Tested and Ranked the Top 4 Brands
Ask anyone whether they occasionally crave certain foods, and most people can name at least a few favorites without hesitation. According to a 2019 New York Post survey of 2,000 Americans, the average person spends about 240 hours per year—roughly 40 minutes a day—thinking about what they would like to eat. Other research suggests that food cravings are common, affecting approximately 80% of women and 60% of men on a regular basis. Whether you follow a low-carb lifestyle or not, chances are you've experienced a powerful food craving yourself. Food cravings can be influenced by many factors. Sometimes they may signal that your body is lacking adequate nutrition or certain nutrients. In other cases, emotions such as stress, boredom, anxiety, or the desire for comfort may play a role. Most cravings are likely a combination of both physical and psychological factors. Ice cream consistently ranks among America's most-craved foods. Its rich, creamy texture and sweet flavor create a pleasurable eating experience that many people associate with comfort and relaxation. Studies have shown that foods we enjoy activate regions of the brain associated with pleasure and reward, helping explain why a bowl of ice cream can be so tempting after a long day. I scream, you scream, we all scream for keto ice cream. If you're following a low-carb or ketogenic lifestyle and occasionally want a frozen treat, there are now several sugar-free and keto-friendly ice cream options available. We tested some of the most popular brands on the market and evaluated them based on flavor, scoopability, mouthfeel, net carbohydrates, ingredient quality, and overall keto friendliness. One brand that did not make our list is Arctic Zero, which we do not recommend for several reasons. Below are Chef Janine's's top four keto ice cream choices, ranked from our favorite to our least favorite. 4. HALO TOP KETO This is our least favorite choice among the four brands we tested. You can find Halo Top Keto in most major grocery chains. Halo Top Keto ice creams have a wide selection of flavors. The basic flavors taste fine, yet some flavors are too sweet and artificial tasting. Comfort Keto's least favorite flavor is Jelly Donut. Some flavors have a creamy mouthfeel, yet some flavors are a bit chalky. This brand is not easily scoopable straight out of the freezer and needs about 5-10 on the counter. They use erythritol as sweetener which is good. Net carbs are about 6-7 grams. The ingredients are not totally clean, as this brand contains cornstarch, maltitol, and even wheat - not good for folks who are diabetic. We consider this brand to be dirty keto at most. We recommend this brand if there are no other options available.. 3. ENLIGHTENED KETO This one is our third best choice. You can find this brand at Sprouts and other major grocery chains. Enlightened Keto ice creams have a wide selection of flavors. All flavors taste great and have a good creamy mouthfeel, yet some flavors are a bit chalky. This brand is not easily scoopable straight out of the freezer and needs about 5-10 on the counter. They use erythritol and allulose as sweetener which is good. Net carbs are about 7-8 grams. The ingredients are quite clean, yet this brand contains soluble corn fiber - not perfect for folks who are diabetic. We consider this brand to be acceptable keto, yet not the best. 2. KETO PINT This one is our second best choice. You can find this brand in Grocery Outlet. Keto Pint ice creams taste great and have a good creamy mouthfeel, yet are less sweet than other brands. This brand is not easily scoopable straight out of the freezer and needs about 15 on the counter. They use erythritol as sweetener which is good. Net carbs are about 6 grams. The ingredients are quite clean. We consider this brand to be clean keto. 1. REBEL CREAMERY This one is our top choice. You can find this brand in all major grocery chains and big box stores including Walmart. Rebel ice creams have a wide selection of flavors. All flavors taste great and have perfect creamy mouthfeel. We recommend the triple chocolate among all flavors. Its creamy texture makes it perfect to scoop straight out of the freezer. They use erythritol as sweetener which is good. Net carbs are between 5-8 grams. The ingredients of all flavors are quite clean. We consider this brand to be clean keto. Final Thoughts The good news is that following a ketogenic lifestyle no longer means giving up ice cream. Today's keto ice cream brands have come a long way, offering rich flavors, satisfying textures, and significantly fewer carbohydrates than traditional ice cream. While all four products on our list can satisfy an occasional craving, Rebel Creamery stood out as our overall favorite for its flavor, creamy texture, ingredient quality, and ease of scoopability. As always, remember that keto treats are still treats and are best enjoyed in moderation as part of an overall healthy low-carb lifestyle. If you have a favorite keto ice cream that didn't make our list, we'd love to hear about it. Until then, keep calm, stay keto, and enjoy every spoonful. Bon Appétit! Chef Janine.
- Celebrating the Meals That Started It All: A Look Back at Comfort Keto's Most Popular Dishes of 2020–2021
Before ketogenic nutrition became widely known, Chef Janine partnered with local Valley-Wide Community Centers throughout the greater San Jacinto Valley to host educational workshops, cooking demonstrations, and tasting events. Because many participants were completely new to low-carb living, the classes often began with the basics—how the human body works, the role of the digestive system, and how food influences energy, blood sugar, and overall health. From there, attendees learned about the impact of processed foods and sugars before being introduced to the principles of ketogenic nutrition. From community workshops and educational seminars to chef-crafted prepared meals, our journey has always focused on helping people enjoy delicious food while pursuing better health. What began as ketogenic education programs evolved into a prepared meals service shaped by the feedback, support, and participation of our community—a commitment that continues with every meal we prepare. These workshops helped hundreds of people discover that ketogenic food could be both nourishing and delicious. They also created a strong community of individuals committed to improving their health through better nutrition. When the COVID-19 pandemic brought in-person events to a halt, Chef Janine shifted her focus to preparing fresh ketogenic meals for curbside pickup and later home delivery throughout the region. During the early months of the pandemic, many former workshop participants helped test and evaluate more than 120 ketogenic recipes over a three-month period. These community-tested recipes became the foundation of the original Comfort Keto meal program. While not every dish earned a permanent place on the menu, the process helped identify customer favorites and laid the groundwork for the prepared meal offerings that continue to evolve today. The meals featured below represent some of the most popular selections from those early years. Some have since been refined, others have inspired new creations, and many remain customer favorites more than five years later. We are proud to occasionally bring these beloved dishes back to our menu and look forward to serving you many new culinary creations in the years ahead. Here are just a few of the recipes that made it to the top: Although desserts are not typically part of our prepared meals program, we occasionally offer them as special-order creations. This Ketogenic Vanilla Mousse Roll Cake was an instant favorite and remains one of the most memorable desserts in Comfort Keto's history. Thanks to the invaluable feedback and participation of our pilot program members, we identified several dozen of the most popular and highly rated recipes, which became the foundation of the Comfort Keto prepared meals program. Many of these dishes continue to be enjoyed by our customers today. We are proud to occasionally bring these community favorites back to our menu while continuing to develop new recipes and seasonal offerings. More than five years later, many of these original creations remain among our most requested meals and have earned a lasting place in the Comfort Keto tradition. We sincerely thank you for your trust, loyalty, and continued support throughout the years. It has been our privilege to serve this wonderful community, and we look forward to sharing many more delicious meals with you in the years ahead. Wishing you great health and happy eating, Chef Janine.
- Why Laughter May Be One of the Most Underrated Health Tools We Have
At Comfort Keto, we spend a lot of time talking about food, nutrition, metabolic health, ingredients, and healthy lifestyle habits. We discuss everything from protein quality and healthy fats to hydration and sleep. But today, let's talk about something a little different. Let's talk about laughter. If you've been following us for a while, you've probably noticed that we occasionally share funny keto cartoons, food jokes, and lighthearted memes. Some people see them simply as entertainment, but there may be more value in a good laugh than most of us realize. The Healing Power of a Good Laugh Think about how you feel after a genuine belly laugh. Your shoulders relax. Your mood improves. The tension you've been carrying all day seems a little lighter. That's not just your imagination. Research has shown that laughter can reduce stress hormones, encourage the release of endorphins (the body's natural feel-good chemicals), and even improve circulation. In many ways, laughter helps signal to the body that it is safe to relax. In a world filled with constant notifications, deadlines, worries, and responsibilities, that signal can be incredibly valuable. Stress and Health Are Closely Connected Many people focus exclusively on food when they begin a health journey. Food matters. Exercise matters. Sleep matters. But chronic stress can undermine all of those efforts. When we're stressed, we often make poorer food choices, sleep less soundly, and struggle to stay consistent with healthy habits. We may find ourselves reaching for comfort foods, snacking unnecessarily, or abandoning routines that normally serve us well. Moments of joy, humor, and connection help interrupt that cycle. Ketogenic diet has lots of life saving benefits. A simple laugh may not solve every problem, but it can help us approach those problems with a clearer mind and a lighter heart. Laughter Brings People Together One of the things we've always appreciated most about the Comfort Keto community is the friendships that form around food. People share recipes. They exchange ideas. They celebrate victories. They encourage one another through challenges. And they laugh together. Shared laughter creates connection. It reminds us that we're not walking this journey alone. The healthiest communities are rarely built on rules and discipline alone. They're built on relationships, encouragement, and the ability to smile together along the way. Why We Share Keto Cartoons The keto cartoons we post aren't intended to be serious nutrition lessons. They're simply little moments of fun. A pickle wondering where all the pickle juice went. A turkey proudly announcing "KETO." A bacon-and-eggs love story. They remind us not to take ourselves too seriously. Healthy living doesn't have to feel like punishment. It doesn't have to be rigid, joyless, or stressful. Sometimes it's perfectly okay to laugh at a silly joke, smile at a cartoon, and enjoy the lighter side of life. A Small Daily Habit Worth Keeping Many wellness experts encourage habits such as walking, drinking more water, getting adequate sleep, and spending time outdoors. Perhaps we should add one more to the list: Find something that makes you laugh every day. Watch a funny video. Call a friend who always makes you smile. Share a joke. Read a comic. Enjoy a keto cartoon. Your body, your mind, and your outlook may benefit more than you think. At Comfort Keto, we believe health is about more than what's on your plate. It's about creating a lifestyle that supports long-term well-being, connection, and enjoyment. And sometimes, the healthiest thing you can do is simply laugh. So go ahead. Enjoy the cartoons. We certainly had fun sharing them. Until next time, stay hydrated, stay nourished, and don't forget to laugh a little along the way. Chef Janine.
- ♻️🧴 Microplastics in Your Body: Where They Come From and How to Remove Them from Your Life
What Are Microplastics? Microplastics come from cosmetics, health and beauty products, clothing, food packaging, and industrial processes. Microplastics are tiny plastic particles measuring less than five millimeters in length. They originate from many everyday sources, including cosmetics, personal care products, synthetic clothing, food packaging, household items, and industrial manufacturing processes. These microscopic particles have become a growing environmental concern. They contaminate our oceans, rivers, soil, and air, posing risks to wildlife and ecosystems. Researchers have also detected microplastics throughout the human body, including in blood, organs, and other tissues. The reality is that virtually all of us are exposed to microplastics throughout our lives. The encouraging news is that emerging research suggests the body may be able to significantly reduce its microplastic burden over time when exposure is minimized and appropriate lifestyle strategies are followed. In the video below, Dr. Anthony Jay, a biochemist and former researcher affiliated with the Mayo Clinic, discusses practical steps you can take to reduce your exposure to microplastics and support your body's natural ability to eliminate them. The good news is that according to Dr. Anthony Jay, significant reductions in the body's microplastic burden may be possible in as little as six months by reducing exposure and adopting specific lifestyle practices. - 💥 Can Keto Kill the Migraine?
Exploring the Promise of Ketogenic Therapies for Headache Relief Headaches—particularly migraines—are far more than a temporary discomfort. For millions of people, they can disrupt daily activities, reduce productivity, and significantly diminish quality of life. Despite the availability of various medications and treatment options, many individuals continue to struggle with inadequate relief, unwanted side effects, or treatments that fail to address the underlying causes of their symptoms. 😖 For many sufferers, finding a long-term solution can feel like an ongoing challenge. However, emerging research is shedding light on a promising new approach: ketogenic therapies. By shifting the body's primary fuel source from glucose to ketones, ketogenic nutrition may help address several of the biological mechanisms associated with headaches and migraines, including inflammation, energy metabolism, and nervous system function. ✨ The exciting possibility is that what we eat may play a much larger role in headache prevention and relief than previously understood. As scientific interest continues to grow, ketogenic therapies are gaining attention as a potential complementary strategy for those seeking a more natural and targeted approach to managing headache disorders. Headaches, especially migraines, are more than just an inconvenience—they're a major source of personal and professional impairment. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or seek emergency medical care immediately. 🥑 Keto for Headache Relief? Emerging research suggests that ketogenic dietary therapies may offer meaningful relief for people who suffer from migraines. Rather than relying primarily on glucose for fuel, a ketogenic diet shifts the body toward using ketone bodies—a more stable energy source that may help reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks. 🧠⚡ 🔬 What Does the Research Show? The findings so far are encouraging. Multiple clinical studies have reported improvements in migraine symptoms among individuals following ketogenic therapies. Several studies by researchers including Dr. Cherubino Di Lorenzo, Dr. Simona Bongiovanni, Dr. Patrizia Riva, and other headache specialists have demonstrated promising results, with great majority of the participants experiencing fewer migraine attacks and improved quality of life while following ketogenic therapies. Researchers monitor ketone levels through blood or urine testing to confirm ketosis and evaluate its relationship to migraine outcomes. While many participants experience significant benefits, responses vary from person to person. Some individuals report dramatic improvement, while others experience little change. These differences highlight the need for additional research to better understand who is most likely to benefit. 🔄 Different Approaches to Ketogenic Therapy 🥗 Very Low-Calorie Ketogenic Diet (VLCKD) Commonly used in obesity treatment, this approach typically provides 800 calories or less per day, with very low carbohydrate intake (approximately 30 grams daily), moderate protein, and controlled fat intake. It has shown promising results, particularly among overweight individuals, and is often followed by a gradual transition to a low-glycemic eating plan. 🥓 Modified Atkins Diet (MAD) The Modified Atkins Diet offers a more flexible and sustainable approach. Carbohydrates generally begin at around 10 grams per day and are gradually increased based on individual response. The diet emphasizes meats, eggs, healthy fats, and non-starchy vegetables, making it easier for many people to maintain long-term. 🧀 Classic Ketogenic Diet (cKDT) Originally developed for epilepsy management, the Classic Ketogenic Diet uses carefully calculated fat-to-protein-plus-carbohydrate ratios, typically 2:1 or 3:1. While more restrictive, it may provide substantial benefits for some individuals when implemented under professional supervision. 🧪 Other Ketogenic Strategies Researchers such as Dr. Cherubino Di Lorenzo and Dr. Valentina Ciaffi have explored the use of exogenous ketone supplements, including beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), as a potential strategy for migraine management without requiring strict dietary ketosis. Other studies have examined low-carbohydrate, high-protein approaches that do not meet the criteria of a traditional ketogenic diet. 🧠 Does It Work? The results are promising. Studies conducted by researchers such as Di Lorenzo and Bongiovanni found that approximately 58% to 83% of participants reported improvement in their migraine symptoms. One study even observed complete migraine remission in 63% of participants. 🎯 However, not every study demonstrated significant benefits, and many involved relatively small sample sizes. While ketogenic therapies are not a universal solution, they may represent a valuable option for individuals who have not responded well to conventional treatments. 📏 Why Ketone Monitoring Matters Measuring ketone levels can help assess dietary adherence and may provide insights into treatment effectiveness. Most studies have relied on urine ketone testing, which is convenient but not always precise. Blood ketone measurements are generally more accurate, although they have been used less frequently in migraine research. Interestingly, similar ketone levels have been observed in both responders and non-responders, suggesting that the relationship between ketosis and migraine relief may be more complex than ketone levels alone. 😅 Potential Side Effects and Challenges Most participants tolerate ketogenic therapies reasonably well, but side effects can occur. Common complaints include: • Constipation • Fatigue • Nausea • Dizziness • Muscle cramps Some individuals also report excessive weight loss or temporary hair thinning. Social and lifestyle challenges can make adherence difficult, contributing to dropout rates as high as 39% in certain studies. 📊 What Do Meta-Analyses Show? When researchers combined data from multiple studies, they found a significant overall reduction in monthly migraine frequency among individuals following ketogenic interventions. Although these findings are encouraging, differences in study design, treatment protocols, and sample sizes mean that larger, higher-quality clinical trials are still needed—particularly for the Classic Ketogenic Diet and exogenous ketone supplementation. 🔍 Questions Researchers Are Still Exploring Several important questions remain: 🧬 How much of the benefit comes from weight loss itself? 🧪 Are blood ketone measurements more predictive than urine ketone testing? 📆 What is the ideal duration of ketogenic therapy? ⚖️ Is ketogenic therapy equally effective for individuals who are not overweight? 💊 Can ketogenic therapies be safely and effectively combined with conventional migraine medications? 💡 Final Thoughts Ketogenic therapy is not a miracle cure, but it represents one of the most promising emerging approaches in migraine management. By supporting brain energy metabolism and addressing potential underlying mechanisms involved in headache disorders, ketogenic nutrition may offer hope to individuals seeking alternatives to traditional treatments. For those who continue to struggle with migraines despite conventional therapies, a well-formulated ketogenic approach may be worth discussing with a qualified healthcare professional. As research continues to evolve, ketogenic therapies are increasingly earning a place in the conversation about comprehensive migraine care. 💚 Here's to Feeling Better Every Day Chef Janine.
