The effects of sugar — particularly fructose — can set the body on a vicious cycle known as metabolic syndrome.

In one study, UC Davis' Kimber Stanhope and her colleagues altered the diets of a group of volunteers. Instead of consuming carbohydrate-rich foods such as rice, pasta, and bread, participants were given sugary beverages. The metabolic effects began in the liver, where fructose is primarily processed. From there, Stanhope explains, a chain of physiological responses was triggered throughout the body.

Quitting problem foods is so much easier when you understand just exactly what's going on inside your body.
