Bulletproof Coffee—coffee blended with butter and often MCT oil—was popularized by entrepreneur Dave Asprey and quickly gained a following among keto enthusiasts. Designed as a low-carb alternative to traditional breakfasts, it provides sustained energy without the blood sugar spikes commonly associated with carbohydrate-heavy morning meals.

A cup of Bulletproof coffee can help fuel your morning while replacing the cereals, pastries, and other high-carb breakfast foods many people are accustomed to. These carbohydrate-rich foods often cause blood sugar fluctuations that can leave you feeling hungry and reaching for another sugar fix by mid-morning. By emphasizing healthy fats instead of carbohydrates, Bulletproof coffee may help promote steadier energy levels and greater satiety throughout the morning.

How to Make Bulletproof Coffee

Bulletproof coffee is made by blending freshly brewed coffee with unsalted butter and a source of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), such as MCT oil or pure cold-pressed coconut oil. Some keto enthusiasts also add a small amount of exogenous ketones in powder form to further support ketosis and provide an additional energy source.

If desired, you may add a keto-friendly sweetener to taste. Monk fruit sweetener is often preferred because its flavor is closest to that of sugar. Others may prefer stevia, erythritol, xylitol, or allulose. As with any sweetener, individual tolerance varies, and some people may experience digestive discomfort.

Our recommendation: Try to enjoy your coffee without sweeteners whenever possible. Over time, many people find that their taste buds adapt and they begin to appreciate the natural flavors of coffee without added sweetness.

Basic Recipe

  • 8–12 ounces freshly brewed coffee

  • 1–2 tablespoons unsalted butter (preferably grass-fed)

  • 1 tablespoon MCT oil or cold-pressed coconut oil

  • Optional: keto-friendly sweetener to taste

  • Optional: exogenous ketone powder

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend for 20–30 seconds until the mixture becomes smooth, creamy, and frothy. The finished drink should resemble a rich, creamy latte.

Safety Tips

Use caution when blending hot liquids.

  • Make sure your blender is rated for hot liquids.

  • Warm the blender container first by rinsing it with hot water before adding the coffee.

  • Do not overfill the blender.

  • Place a kitchen towel over the lid and hold it firmly while blending to prevent hot liquid from escaping.

  • Start blending at a low speed and gradually increase as needed.

A properly prepared Bulletproof coffee can be a satisfying, high-fat breakfast alternative that helps support stable energy levels throughout the morning.
